The Sweetheart Clip

The Sweetheart Clip is a classic Retro trim. People will delight in the fantastical blend of form and function. This trim is “business” from the profile and “party” from the sky!

Fig 1) You will start this trim like many other Poodle trims and shave the feet, face, and base of the tail clean and short.

Fig 2) On any breed with long ears that I wish to keep long, I will use vet wrap to keep the ears out of my way during the grooming process. The vet wrap does not make a crease in the ears.

Fig 3) I like to start every patterned trim by first placing a decent Modern trim. So here I’m clipping the body to the desired length of half an inch.

Fig 4) When clipping the muscle groups of the shoulders and thighs, I go up two lengths so that I’m still able to groom substance into the coat of my dog.

Fig 5) I then take the angles on the front of the dog in tight enough to show off the dog’s anatomy. Here I used a 5/8” blade.

Fig 6) I pick the dog’s legs up off the table to scissor tight bevels.

Fig 7) The angles in the rear need to be tight to balance out the front. Here I used a 3/8” blade.

Fig 8) Because this is a Retro trim, it needs to have the whole neck shaved, and for this trim you want to create a “V” shape. 

Fig 9) While looking down on the dog’s spine, I create the point of both of the heart shapes.

Fig 10) Next I etch the “V” at the top of the larger torso heart.

Fig 11) Using a curved scissor, I then transition the shave line of the neck.

Fig 12) Now I do this everywhere else that I need to transition from a shave pattern.

Fig 13) I then scissor  the legs, which can be to your desired length.

Fig 14) To finish up this sweet pup, I shape up the topknot which, again, can be done to your preference. ✂️
